چکیده

We present new calculations of X-ray polarization from black hole (BH) accretion disks in the thermally-dominated state, using a Monte-Carlo ray-tracing code in full general relativity. In contrast to many previously published studies, our approach allows us to include returning radiation that is deflected by the strong-field gravity of the BH and scatters off of the disk before reaching a distant observer. Although carrying a relatively small fraction of the total observed flux, the scattered radiation tends to be highly polarized and in a direction perpendicular to the direct radiation. For moderately large spin parameters (a/M & 0.9), this scattered returning radiation dominates the polarization signal at energies above the thermal peak, giving a net rotation in the polarization angle of 90. We show how these new features of the polarization spectra from BHs in the thermal state may be developed into a powerful tool for measuring BH spin and probing the gas flow in the innermost disk. In addition to determining the emission profile, polarization observations can be used to constrain other properties of the system such as BH mass, inclination, and distance. New instruments currently under development should be able to exploit this tool in the near future. Subject headings: black hole physics – accretion disks – X-rays:binaries

Thermal X-Ray Line Emission from Accreting Black Holes

We present model X-ray spectra of accreting black holes with advection-dominated accretion flows, paying attention to thermal emission lines from the hot plasma. We show that the Advanced X-ray Astrophysical Facility (AXAF) might be able to observe lines from X-ray binaries such as V404 Cyg in quiescence, the Galactic center black hole Sagittarius A, and the nuclei of nearby galaxies such as M8...

The X-ray/γ-ray spectrum of XTE J1550–564 in the very high state

We fit the broad-band X/γ-ray spectrum (0.8–1000 keV) of the accreting black hole XTE J1550–564 in the very high state. The quasi-simultaneous data from ASCA, RXTE and OSSE show that the disc is strongly Comptonized, with a high energy tail extending out to several hundreds keV. However, inverse Compton scattering by a purely thermal or purely power-law electron distribution cannot explain the ...

A Scheme to Unify Low-Power Accreting Black Holes Jet-Dominated Accretion Flows and the Radio/X-Ray Correlation

We explore the evolution in power of black holes of all masses, and their associated jets, within the scheme of an accretion rate-dependent state transition. Below a critical value of the accretion rate all systems are assumed to undergo a transition to a state where the dominant accretion mode is optically thin and radiatively inefficient. In these significantly sub-Eddington systems, the spec...

Radiative Processes in Microquasars

Recent advances in the X-ray and soft γ-ray observations of accreting black holes and microquasars, in particular, are reviewed. The radiative processes responsible for the emission are discussed briefly. The hybrid thermal/nonthermal Comptonization model is shown to describe well the observed broad-band spectra. We also comments on alternative phenomenological and physical models that are used...

Advection-Dominated Models of Luminous Accreting Black Holes

It has been found that a class of optically-thin two-temperature advection-dominated accretion solutions explains many observations of low-luminosity accreting black holes. Here it is shown that these models give a satisfactory description also of higher luminosity systems, provided the viscosity parameter is large. The models reproduce the spectra of black hole X-ray binaries in the Low State,...
